But as the story has rumbled on, reactions in Colombia have hardened.

Prostitution is legal in Colombia, but the potentially negative impact of the scandal on the country’s image abroad was shown by an advertisement from a low-budget US airline.

A poster promoting flights to Cartagena featured a man dressed in the dark suit and glasses associated with US secret agents and four scantily-clad girls, with the far from subtle slogan “More bang for your buck.”

And in a reference to the quarrel over money between one of the agents and his escort, which is said to have detonated the scandal, the advertisement also said that “upfront payment” was required.

The Colombian authorities, however, did not appreciate the joke.

“It is a shameful publication and we demand that the airline withdraw it and publicly apologise to Cartagena and Colombia,” said Tourism Minister Sergio Diaz.

Concerns over the country being perceived as a sex tourism paradise only increased after the Washington Post ran an article describing Cartagena, a Unesco World Heritage site, as “swimming in prostitutes”.

“Prostitution in Colombia is legal and widely accepted, a slightly embarrassing but very real part of the booming tourist trade,” said the Post.

This brought a swift response from the Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (Anato).

“That’s not Cartagena’s reality. The streets are not packed with prostitutes. That’s not the city I see, that’s not the city we want,” Rodrigo Maldonado, Anato’s president, told the BBC.

“Tourists are drawn to Colombia because of its nature, its mountains and landscapes, its diversity, its architecture. To say otherwise is not to know the country,” he said.

Reality

Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin also expressed regret at what she called the “stigmatisation” of Cartagena and Colombia.

“The fault lies with the US Secret Service. Prostitution exists everywhere. Wherever there’s a man, there’s prostitution, so don’t come and tell us it’s only Cartagena,” she said.

Ms Holguin is, of course, right.

But that does not mean Colombia does not have a problem.

“Many Colombian women go into prostitution because of their economic circumstances, because they have children but not money, because they don’t have other options,” says Betty Pedraza, director of Espacios de Mujer, a local NGO that supports sex workers.

“It’s a reflection of inequality, a reflection of the feminisation of poverty. And the fact that Colombian women are well-known for their beauty doesn’t help,” she said.

Ms Pedraza said she understood the wider concern that Colombia was being portrayed as a sexual paradise, after years trying to get rid of an image associated with sex, drugs and violence.

“But, at least for us, the main challenge is to make sure that sex workers are not denied their rights and to make sure they have the opportunity to pursue other options if that’s what they want,” she said.

“And the current debate is only stressing the obvious. Everybody knows there’s a lot of prostitution, that there’s sex tourism – and not only in Cartagena.

“But very little will happen after that.”

For those of you who didn’t notice the dozens of headlines shouting “We’ve found the G-spot!”, a new study claims to have found ‘evidence’ of the elusive pleasure zone in the cadaver of an 83-year-old woman. It’s hailed as ground-breaking research.

It’s not.

Adam Ostrzenski, a gynacologist in Florida, dissected the anatomical structure, describing it as a “well delineated sac” (translation: it looks a bit like a grape), measuring between 8.1 and 33 millimetres. He claims this confirms the existence of the G-spot “which may lead to a better understanding and improvement of female sexual function.”

Oh really? How exactly?

Just because he found something (what?) in the spot where the G-spot is supposed to be, doesn’t mean that is the G-spot. As Debbie Herbenick from the Kinsey Institute said: “It’s not like body parts come with pre-labelled signs indicating what they are – and calling this structure the ‘G-spot’ doesn’t make it so.”

How do we know that area felt pleasurable when stimulated? For all we know, it’s a button that connects to the earlobe! (Joking – but you get my point!) Far more helpful had this all magically occurred within an episode of Six Feet Under where corpses frequently came to life and had conversations with the undertaker. Then they could have asked helpful questions like: “Did you enjoy it doggy style?” (People who have G-spot orgasms often report having them this way.) “Have you ever ejaculated?” (Again, there’s a link). Or “Do you mind if we insert this specially designed toy and wiggle it around a bit to see if you like it?” The woman was dead and sadly remained dead so we have no idea whether the structure that was found generates sexual pleasure.

There’s no doubt there’s an area on the front vaginal wall that is ultrasensitive to stimulation, but we still don’t know if there’s a particular ‘spot’. Does it really matter? Why do we feel the need to label things and give them catchy names?

The most fascinating thing for me about the whole G-spot ‘breakthrough’ (not) is that it highlights once again, how we cling onto myths about sex and refuse to let go, even when there is no evidence to support them.
I’m not denying that stimulating the area where the G-spot is reputed to be (one to two inches along the front wall of the vagina) is highly pleasurable for some women. That’s why I talk about this area in my books and created a toy specifically to stimulate it. I’m forced to call it a ‘G-spot’ and call the toy a ‘G-spot vibe’ because otherwise no-one would know what the hell I’m talking about.

And none of you would care.

Mention ‘G-spot’, however, and ears prick up. People are full of opinions about it! “Yes, there is one. I have one, so it’s true!” “No, there isn’t one. So therefore there is no such thing.” “My ex-girlfriend had several.” “Mine is above my clitoris.” Want to liven up a boring dinner party? Throw in that you went searching for your G-spot and everyone perks up instantly.

We want to believe there’s a G-spot because it’s a ‘fact’ about sex that all of us have heard of and therefore know about.

We cling onto other sex myths just as tenaciously. The one that says women orgasm easily and frequently through intercourse alone. We knew 2000 YEARS AGO thanks to ancient texts this wasn’t true, and that women needed clitoral stimulation. But most people still believe this is true today.

I write the same old sentence over and over, “Only 20-30% of women orgasm purely through penetration” and no-one says a word to refute it but the average person doesn’t truly believe it. Men still mutter about exes or current lovers who “seem to have no problem.” Women blush (when men are near) and look evasive to imply they are definitely in the 20-30% category. (Good God guys, orgasms are so easy to fake, most men wouldn’t know a real one if it tapped them on the shoulder. Not that it’s your fault: women fake them so often, it’s no wonder you don’t have a clue what’s real and what’s not.)

Another myth that’s still presented as ‘fact’: The average couple has sex 2.5 times a week. Why is this wrong? Well, there is no such thing as an average couple. This statistic is calculated by making one big sexual melting pot and chucking in the sex life of Bob and Dorothy, 85-years-old and living in a nursing home, with Tod and Sara, 19-years-old and going at it like rabbits, and everyone in between and coming up with an average number. It’s utterly pointless. Frequency is (obviously) far more useful (if you must compare yourself with an ‘average’) if you take into account age, the length of time the couple are together and whether they have small children.

Why do we cling onto sex myths so tightly when they’re so blatantly not true? Could it be because most of the general population are still sexually illiterate, despite the sexually saturated society we live in? We have sexualized teens, porn coming out our earholes, sex on telly, sexy ads on billboards and still we know nothing about the basics.

And they say there’s no need for sex education in schools. Go figure!

I have a fantastic weekend planned.  It is of course Grand National day - not forgetting probably the most exciting F.A. cup semi final for a long time for  both Liverpool and Everton fans.  Liverpool are down to the 3rd choice goal keeper and Mr Dalgleish Et Al really do have something to prove to the long suffering reds fans and Everton under  Mr Moyes are gasping for a trophy!   A brilliant game in store. Whoever wins will go on to represent Liverpool against the Cockneys best at Anfield south.

Liverpool escort career on hold for the weekend!

Meanwhile in the City my Liverpool  escort career will be on hold for 24 hours or so whilst I enjoy my weekend of sport.  Starting my day early on I booked a room at ‘The hard days night’  hotel on North John Street weeks ago as I probably wont be in a fit state to find my way home – and definately not in any fit state to drive! A YOUNG woman is being hunted by police after a man claims he was sexually assaulted and robbed in a seaside town as he walked home.

The 60-year-old victim was approached by the woman outside a hotel in Bognor Regis

He became nervous after noticing a man nearby but, as the victim went to walk on, the woman grabbed his arms to stop him, Sussex Police said.

She then pulled him close by forcing his right arm behind her and made him hold her bottom before touching him, a police spokesman added.

The woman then removed his wallet from his coat pocket and threw it to the man, who took £25 in cash before throwing it back.

A passer-by stopped to ask the “extremely distressed” victim if he was fine but he was scared and walked off, the police spokesman said.

Pc Trevor Pritchard, of Sussex Police, said: “Although the victim wasn’t physically injured, he was left extremely distressed and scared by what happened.”

Police appealed for help in tracing the man who offered help to the victim. He was about 23 years old and around 6ft.

Meanwhile, the woman is described as white, English, aged about 20, around 5ft 6in and of medium build, with light brown hair that was tied up on her head.

She was wearing a mauve top with flowers and pale jeans.
